WBI- Web-Based Instruction
Khan (1997) defines Web-Base Instruction (WBI) as a hypermedia based instructional program which utilizes the attributes and
resources of the WWW to create a meaningful learning environment where learning
is fostered and supported.
BENEFITS OF WEB-BASED INSTRUCTION
- Unparalleled access to instructional resources.
- Improvement in learning outcomes.
- Offers engaging and interactive learning experiences that are open, flexible and distributed.
- Can be conveniently modified and redistributed, readily accessed, and quickly linked to related sources of knowledge, thus establishing a backbone for “anytime, anywhere” learning.
- Support management of large class.
- Allows interactions between faculty and students through email, resource sharing and collaboration.
- Offers a learner-driven collaborative learning environment.
- Cost effective.
CATEGORIES OF WEB-BASED INSTRUCTION
1. Augmented Learning
- Web-based instruction is used to extend the physical classroom in order to supplement face-to-face instruction.
- Its an on-demand learning technique where the environment adapts to the learner. By providing remediation on-demand, learners can gain greater understanding of a topic while stimulating discovery and learning.
Benefits of Augmented Learning
- Eye-catching visualization is what all of us like.
- More interactive than ever.
- Optimization of traditional tools and methods for reuse in more effective manner.
- Maximum efficiency and productivity with minimum fuss.
- Stimulation of Curiosity.
- Saves time and nerves.
- No troubles with language barrier.
2. Blended Learning
- Blended Learning is an instructional method of delivery that combines web-based instruction with face-to-face classroom instruction.
- Blended learning is an approach to education that combines online educational materials and opportunities for interaction online with traditional place-based classroom methods.
- It requires the physical presence of both teacher and student, with some elements of student control over time, place, path, or pace. While students still attend "brick-and-mortar" schools with a teacher present, face-to-face classroom practices are combined with computer-mediated activities regarding content and delivery.
- Blended learning is also used in professional development and training settings.
Benefits of Blended Learning
- Flexibility- Blended learning classes offer flexibility for teachers in how they present material and for students in the pace and variety of the learning approaches they experience.
- Effectiveness- Studies have shown that because blended learning incorporates multiple methods of instruction from an assortment of perspectives, it proves to have an effective learning outcome for most students involved.
- Teacher empowerment-By incorporating technology into classroom instruction, teachers are freed up to reach more students. Teachers can move within the stations or activities to interact with individual or small groups of students and check on progress. Data provided by educational technology programs also empowers teachers with insights on each student’s learning so they can more effectively address gaps.
- Engagement-Because most students today are surrounded by technology in their everyday life, they often engage more easily with material when technology is incorporated in instructional settings. Additionally, students become empowered as they expand their technological skills and competency with technology.
- Differentiation- because blended learning incorporates a variety of instructional approaches, learning activities can be tailored to address numerous learning styles. Additionally, high-quality digital educational tools allow teachers to measure each student’s individual learning level and provide activities and instruction that meet the child where they are to give them appropriate lesson material.
3. Online Learning
- Online Learning is commonly accepted by adult learners as this instructional method offers flexibility in time and space.
- Online learning is education that takes place over the Internet. It is often referred to as “e learning” among other terms. However, online learning is just one type of “distance learning” - the umbrella term for any learning that takes place across distance and not in a traditional classroom.
- Convenience: 24/7 access from any online computer; accommodates busy schedules; no commuting, no searching for parking.
- Enhanced Learning: Research shows increased depth of understanding and retention of course content; more meaningful discussions; emphasis on writing skills, technology skills, and life skills like time management, independence, and self-discipline
- Leveling of the Playing Field: Students can take more time to think and reflect before communicating; shy students tend to thrive online; anonymity of the online environment.
- Interaction: Increased student-to-teacher and student-to-student interaction and discussion; a more student-centered learning environment; less passive listening and more active learning; a greater sense of connectedness, synergy.
- Innovative Teaching: Student-centered approaches; increased variety and creativity of learning activities; address different learning styles; changes and improvements can translate to on-ground courses as well
- Improved Administration: Time to examine student work more thoroughly; ability to document and record online interactions; ability to manage grading online.
- Savings: Accommodate more students; increased student satisfaction = higher retention and fewer repeats.
- Maximize Physical Resources: Lessen demand on limited campus infrastructure; decrease congestion on campus and parking lots.
- Outreach: Give students options; reach new student markets; appeal to current students thus increasing enrollments.
